Do Sheepadoodles have different color variations?

Sheepadoodles come in a variety of beautiful color combinations, thanks to their mixed heritage from the Old English Sheepdog and the Poodle. In this blog, we’re going to dig a little deeper into the selective breeding and genetics of the Merle coloring sheepadoodles. Check out our current litter March 2025 of Merle Sheepadoodle puppies.

The Beauty of Merle Coloring in Sheepadoodles

Sheepadoodles, the adorable crossbreed between an Old English Sheepdog and a Poodle, are well-known for their striking appearances and delightful personalities.

Among the wide variety of coat patterns and colors they can inherit, one of the most stunning is the merle coloring. Fortunately at Sheepadoodle Dynasty, we have some of the most unique and beautiful Merle Sheepadoodle puppies available this March 2025. But you may ask, what makes a Sheepadoodle have a merle coat with possible blue eyes? How does selective sheepadoodle breeding and genetics help these sheepadoodles acquire this unique and beautiful look, and what makes it so captivating?

How does selective breeding and genetics create a Merle color?

Merle is a genetic trait that results in a dappled or marbled coat pattern with a mix of lighter and darker patches. Through selective sheepadoodle breeding, the puppies receive the merle pattern from one of the parents. This pattern often gives the fur a beautifully irregular, watercolor-like appearance. Merle coats can come in various shades, including blue merle (gray and black), red merle (reddish-brown and white), and more subtle or mixed variations. The trait can also affect eye color, giving rise to striking blue or heterochromatic eyes, adding to the dog’s allure.

Careful Breeding Practices- Creating healthy and happy puppies

The merle pattern in Sheepadoodles comes from the Poodle side of their lineage. While Old English Sheepdogs typically have solid or bi-colored coats, certain Poodles carry the merle gene, which can be passed down to their Sheepadoodle offspring when one parent is a merle carrier. The gene responsible for this pattern is dominant, meaning that only one parent needs to carry it for the trait to appear in the puppies. What makes getting a merle sheepadoodle puppy from us safe and secure is the fact that all of these puppies are only carriers of the Merle genes. They are NOT double Merles; therefore, are much healthier and have no issues with their vision or hearing.

Careful breeding practices are essential and highly valued at Sheepadoodle Dynasty.  Breeding two merle-coated dogs can result in puppies with a double dose of the merle gene, which increases the risk of health issues such as hearing or vision impairments. As an ethical and reputable breeder, we are extremely mindful of this and ensure responsible pairings to prioritize the health and well-being of all of our sheepadoodle puppies.
